The Mighty Megalodon

Kick Start activity 1

I learnt a lot about the now extinct, mighty Megalodon. It was like the biggest sea creature in the whole world! But sadly it has gone extinct, due to climate change and also because of the whales moving to colder seas. The Megalodon can go up to 80 meters long, that’s the size of two buses parked next to each other! It’s jaws were so humongous that it could fit two grown adults! This marvellous creature would snack on whales, dolphins, sea lions and even other sharks. For my activity I had to create a Mosaic art based on the Megalodon. You are allowed to use a variety of colours and shapes. I chose to stick to the original colours of a normal shark (blue) and with triangles. Here is my Mosaic Art:

Kea Conservationists

Step it up activity 2

My task for my blog, was to create a Kea-proof bag or lunchbox. I chose to make a lunchbox. It was quite hard at first, but then the ideas started flowing through. I created a steel lunchbox with a lock. This only needs to be used in places that Keas come very often. You can either use a key or a car key type of key, so that i’ts almost impossible for a Kea to open your lunchbox. But you must keep your key in a safe place otherwise, the kea might figure out how to open it with the key. My lunchbox can also come in different colors of your choice. Here is what it would look like:

Kea Conservationists

I have learnt a lot about Keas today, I never knew Keas were very clever! They can literally open a latch! I also learnt that they can be a little cheeky sometimes, and they only live around the West Coast. I’ve sometimes seen the Keas in Arthur’s Pass. They look like they’re waiting for me to give them food. For my activity, I had to either make a poster or a conservationists video based on Keas. I decided to go with the conservationist video, because I enjoy making them. You can learn a little bit more about them in my video, here it is below:

Magical Horses

Step it up activity 2

For my second activity for magical horses, I had to either draw an Alicorn or a Pegasus. I tried drawing both to see which one looked better and cuter, and I picked the Pegasus. We had to name our Pegasus/Alicorn, and I picked Ruby because mine was pink. We also had to give it magical powers, so I gave it the power to grant wishes. Here is my drawing of the Pegasus:

Magical Horses

I learnt about Unicorns, Pegasus’s, and Alicorns. These are all mythical creatures that are made up, but people in the olden days had thought they had actually seen them.! Unicorns are like horses with horns, a Pegasus is like a horse with wings and Alicorns are like horses with wings and horns! Here is a chart with the differences between these magical horses and a fact:

Guardians of the Wild

Step it up activity 2

Today is the last of the summer learning journeys blogs! I am trying really hard to finish as much tasks as possible. For my step it up task for guardians of the wild, I had to create a conservation video about one of the endangered animals in NZ! I made one about the South Island Long-Tailed Bat, and they are one of the endangered animals of New Zealand. It seems that the short tailed and long tailed bats of NZ are already extinct, but the South Island long tailed bat still lives. You can learn more about the South Island Long-tailed bat, in my conservation video:

Guardians of the Wild

It’s been a while since I’ve done any blog posts, so I decided that I would do some today. For my blog post I had to look at some endangered animals in New Zealand. There are three endangered animals I learnt about, The Maui dolphins, Canterbury knobbled weevil and the Mokohinau Stag beetle. I’ll tell you a bit about all of them. The Maui dolphins are endangered because of fishing nets and pollution to the ocean. The Canterbury knobbled was thought to be extinct in the 1924, but was discovered again in 2004. Also the population for the Canterbury knobbled weevil is less than a 100 adults. The the Mokohinau Stag beetle is endangered because of rats. The only place they would be living in right now is on a rat-free rock. For the activity, I had to make Pokemon type of trading cards, based on one of these animals. I picked the Maui dolphins, here it is:

Natural Art

Kick start activity 1

I  could’ve done the natural art on the given day, but it was too windy and rainy around where I live. But I still decided to do it today. I had to make a flying fauna, out of stuff in my yard, like: leave, flowers, rocks or bark. I used most of those except the bark, but instead I used the shells I had collected from the beach. I made a bird, here it is:

Feathers

Step it up activity 2

For my step it up activity, I had to make a quiz about the bird feathers. I also have a few facts, on why birds have feathers? Well It keeps them warm, and helps them to fly. But not all birds with feathers can fly, like for example: the ostrich it’s body is to heavy to carry with it’s small wings. You should give my quiz about feathers a go. Here are some bird feather pictures:

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Today I learnt about Korowai and Kakahu, which are cloaks Maori’s used to make with bird feathers. I got to make my own cloak with feathers on my Chromebook. My one has three layers, with blue and brown colours. Here it is:
